Communication & consistency are essential! If the organization and swim instructor can’t communication with you effectively, it unrealistic to think that they will be able to communicate effectively with our Ausome one.

Consistency is important because you don’t want someone that constantly cancels or whom cancels while you are in route, or worse, is a no call no show!

When we experienced our not so good moments at Warlick YMCA in Gastonia, the unkindness initially came from the swim instructor, but after communicating with the new staff, I realized that the rude behavior was cloud hanging over the entire organization.

This was heartbreaking as we have been working with them for 2 years and little 6 year old autistic Maddox Ritch was lost and later found drowned less than a mile away from my job at a site I have to pass daily. The YMCA directors could care less because Sydney NEVER got back in the water there. NEVER will.

So if you are not comfortable about their communication & Consistency before you start lessons, keep looking.

10 TIPS to effectively find swim lessons for Autism (any Age) HIP MOVE 6 Figure out the TYPE of lessons you want. Group, Private, Semi-Private. Find out what these terms mean in each organization. Be clear, even if you have to produce visuals. This ensures you are prepared to prepare your autism loved one so they know how many people to expect the day of the lesson.   Group: Group lessons can be from 6-10 students at the same time. Duration of lessons are normally 30 minutes and last for 6 – 8 consecutive weeks. If your ausome one can take group lessons, great! Keep in mind that they WILL be in a group setting and treated like a group. No matter how much you have explained the situation to them, they still might leave your child sitting on the edge of the pool unattended! 10 TIPS to effectively find swim lessons for Autism (any Age) HIP MOVE 9 Meet the autism swim instructor BEFORE the lesson If you are strategic enough to find someone you feel comfortable with, meet the instructor before committing to an actual lesson. This meeting can be in or out of water but it should happen BEFORE an actual paid lesson is scheduled. EVERYONE needs to be comfortable getting in the water. This allows you to see how the instructor communicates with your autism loved one and how they respond. If anyone is uncomfortable, better now than a mid pool meltdown.
